Crazy Coupon Capers

Well, folks, it's 11:56 pm (way past my bedtime!), and I haven't posted about my couponing experiences yet. Why? Well, I'm in the middle of a complete overhaul of my coupon organization system, and it's taking forever! I really think it will be well worth it when I'm finished, though. My desire is to have a system that takes very little time, yet still enables me to know what coupons are in my possession at all times so that I can use them for unexpected or clearance deals. When I get finished, I'll show you in detail what I've come up with. In the meantime, I want to see the awesome deals you all got this week with your coupons! Link in or leave a comment and let everyone know how you did!

Sunday Sustenance

2 Timothy 2:4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

I need to repeat this verse to myself quite a few times every single day! It is so easy to get caught up in the things of this life that I forget about what is eternally important. Deal chasing, personal hobbies, general busyness -- all of these things can "entangle" us and keep us from accomplishing what God wants us to do. Not that all of these things are wrong in and of themselves, but when they hinder us from doing other, more important things they are most certainly wrong.

We must continually keep in mind that there is more to life than this life. There is the eternal life if you know the Lord Jesus as your Savior. And in light of that eternal life, we should be telling others how they can have it too. Our time here on earth is too short to waste time on the things of this life. Let's rid ourselves of the entanglements of this life and focus on the eternal life that is ours through Jesus Christ.

I'd love to hear how the Lord is working in your heart too! Link in or leave a comment and let me know!

Crazy Coupon Capers

I took a break on couponing this week. There wasn't anything I really needed, and it's nice to have a break sometimes to refresh me for the next round! But since I don't think I ever go through a week without using at least one coupon, I'll show you what coupon I used this week. (Actually I used two.)
I got my free Wallflower at Bath and Body Works, and I also had gotten a coupon in the mail for a free trial sized lotion. I paid $1.50 for the hand sanitizer, so I got all of this for $1.60 after tax. (By the way, that Wallflower smells goood!)

Now, I'm sure all of you did better than that with your coupons, but I want to see! What great deals did you get with your coupons this week? Link up or leave a comment and let me know how you did! If you link up, it would be lovely if you could leave a link back to this post so your readers can come join in too!

Why Do I Blog?

There has been a discussion going around on Twitter about "Why do you blog?" Problogger Darren Rowse asked the question, and I think it is quite fitting that I share the answer with you, my readers.

I love finding great deals and saving money any way I can, but since I am a very forgetful person, I would end up passing up so many great deals because I couldn't remember what they were. I figured if I had to write every thing down, I might as well put it in a format where others can benefit from it.

I started blogging about any deals that interested me that I needed to remember on my shopping day. Since then I have expanded a bit to include deals that will interest others that may live in a different part of the country than me.

When I get my shopping list ready, I just go to www.centsiblesavings.com, and read through the deals as if I've never seen them before. I try to pay attention to what I could include that would be more helpful for me as a "reader" so that I can do a better job when I go back into "author" mode.

I do hope you all do benefit from the things I post here as much as I benefit from them myself. I appreciate all of the encouraging emails and comments that you all leave. I hope Centsible Savings will continue to be a help to all of you in your endeavor to stretch those hard-earned dollars! And, of course, please spread the word to your friends and family so they can get in on the savings too!

American Girl Coupon Code

I wouldn't exactly call this a "hot deal", but since some of you splurge on American Girl stuff for Christmas presents anyway, I thought I'd pass along a coupon code for you. Use code 159926 to get $10 off a $30 purchase online. This coupon can be used on regular or sale items.

Sunday Sustenance

My husband is going to be singing this song in church tomorrow, and the words have been going through my head since he's been practicing it. It's entitled So Little Time and So Much to Do.

Souls all around us are dying,
Travelling the road down to hell;
Oh! how our hearts should be crying
Salvation's story to tell.
Someone is dying each moment;
What if we've failed to be true
To tell them about Christ's atonement?
There's so little time and so much to do.

Come unto Me, all ye weary
Who labor, and I'll give you rest;
Beneath the lights sin is dreary;
Come unto Me and be blessed.
The time for Christ's coming is nearing;
The end times for sure are in view;
So let's preach the Word without fearing.
There's so little time and so much to do.

So little time and so much to do!
God help us all at our posts to be true.
Tell them this story:
"Christ died for you!"
There's so little time and so much to do!

This was such a good reminder to me to hear him singing this song. How am I spending my time? I am more than willing to spend an hour clipping coupons, but how much am I doing that is of eternal value? Our time on earth here is so short, folks! Let's make every minute count! If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, don't wait any longer. You are not guaranteed one more breath before you will spend an eternity separated from God. You can read here how to be assured of an eternity in heaven. If you are a child of God, are you using every minute with eternity in view? Are you eager to share the gospel with the lost?

I'd love for you to link in or leave a comment and share how the Lord is working in your heart!

Crazy Coupon Capers

My shopping day was unexpectedly long this week. The last thing I wanted to do when I got home was take pictures of everything. I wanted everything put away and out of my sight! I love having pictures to show you, though, and since it wasn't exactly practical for me to get everything back out, I thought I'd show you just the things I got for free with my coupons this week.

Walmart: 6 boxes of Life cereal. Thanks goes to Jenny who gave me the heads up that Wal-Mart has these on sale for $1.00 right now. I had a whole bunch of $1.00 coupons that I had printed off a long time ago, making all six boxes free.

Food Lion: Gerber Graduates baby food. These were on sale for $1.00 each, and there is a $1.00 Food Lion printable here. (You can only print once per computer, but we have 2 computers, so I used two. You have two buy them in separate transactions, though, or the coupon won't go through.)

Harris Teeter: 2 Dole Fruit Naturals, 1 6-pack of Yoplait kids yogurt, 1 pack of Trident gum, and 2 trial size bottles of Clean and Clear. I should have gotten $1 overage on each bottle of Clean and Clear, but the manager wouldn't let me; she adjusted the coupons down. I have heard rumors that Harris Teeter is no longer going to be giving overage anymore, so I checked my receipt to see if the coupons that had doubled gave me overage or if they only doubled up to the regular price. I am thoroughly confused now, because some items gave overage and some didn't. (Regular priced items never give overage, but even some sale items didn't give overage.) I would love to clear up this mystery, so if anyone has anymore input to add, please leave a comment.

For any of you non-couponers, this was a pretty typical week for me as far as the amount of things I get free with coupons. That doesn't count the other items that I paid just a few cents for. Hopefully this will be enough encouragement for you to start using those coupons! And for the benefit of those of you just getting started, don't be discouraged if you're not getting this much stuff free every week. As your coupon stash grows, so will the amount of great deals you can get!

What's your story? Did you get any great deals with your coupons this week? Link up or leave a comment sharing how you did! If you link up, it would be lovely if you could link back to this post as well.

10 Simple Ways to Reduce Your Grocery Expenses

This was a guest post that was published on Money Saving Mom. I thought I'd re-post it here for those of you who didn't see it there.

While picking up my milk for the week, I stopped to consider how many people might wonder why I was digging all the way to the back of the refrigerated section. Then I started thinking about how easy it is for anyone to reduce their grocery budget just by following a few simple guidelines. I’m not talking about spending hours every week clipping coupons and scouring the sale papers for deals.These are simple strategies that everyone can use to help keep their food costs down.

1. Look toward the back of the refrigerated section for the latest-dated milk, cheese, meat and other perishables. It certainly won’t help you cut expenses if your food goes bad and you have to throw it out and buy more.

2. Buy whole milk and mix it with water. It will taste different at first, but you’ll get used to it after a while. If you can bring your taste buds to agree to mixing your milk half and half with water then you’re getting two gallons for the price of one! (Note: Keep in mind that if you have young children, watering down your milk will affect the nutrition of it.)
3. If you’re buying individual fruits (e.g. apples, oranges, etc.) by the pound, pick out the smallest ones. The total weight will be less, and therefore you won’t pay as much, but you won’t notice the difference when you’re eating your apple.

4. Shop early in the morning if at all possible. That is when you’ll find most of the marked down produce, meat, and bread. Even if you can’t shop in the morning, be sure to still keep an eye out for products that have been marked down.

5. Don’t buy too much produce at one time. Produce (especially if it has been shipped a long distance) will not last very long before it has to be thrown out. Try to buy only enough for about one week at a time.

6. If you find a good sale on something you normally buy that has an extended shelf-life or freezer life, stock up. Why wait until later and pay full price when you can buy several now at a much lower price?

7. Be creative and cook with what you have on hand. Make your weekly menus based on what is already in your pantry or freezer. Then you’ll just need to buy a few ingredients to fill in the gaps.

8. Make a list and stick to it when you shop. Unplanned “extras” add up very quickly.

9. Consider how badly you really need something. For example, it doesn’t really take any longer to make pancakes or biscuits from scratch than from a box mix. Yet those box mixes cost quite a bit more than just buying the ingredients would cost. (Cooking from scratch is much better for your health too!)

10. Use coupons. Like I mentioned earlier, I’m not talking about spending hours each week on clipping coupons and scoping out deals. But if something is on your list, you should at least check to see if there is a coupon out for it. A good place to check is the coupon database at couponmom.com. You’ll be surprised at the difference fifty cents here and a dollar there can make!

Why I Buy Things I Don't Need

I have been asked many times why I would buy something that I don't need. I have one specific reason for doing it...I'm getting paid to buy it. My shopping philosophy in general is that I don't buy things I don't need, yet basically every week I come home with something that I will never even use. But when I am getting paid to buy something, there is no reason why I shouldn't. You may be wondering how I can get paid to shop. Here are several of the ways that I can actually earn money on the things I buy.

1. Overage
If a coupon is more than the price of the item I am buying, many stores will take the entire amount of the coupon off your total. If the price of the item is $1.00, and the coupon is for $1.50 off, I would make $.50 buying that particular product. It is especially easy to get overage at a grocery store that doubles coupons. If the item is $1.00, and you have a $.75 coupon, that coupon will double to $1.50, thus providing me with $.50 overage.

2. Catalinas
Many times a store will has a special promotion on a product, and if I buy that product, a coupon will print at the register for a certain amount off my next order. These can be a good deal in and of themselves, but when I combine a coupon with the product, I can actually spend less than the amount of the coupon that prints. A recent example of this would be Glade gel warmers. Food Lion had them on sale for $1.50, and a $2.00 catalina was printing for each one purchased. There were buy one get one free coupons out, so I could have purchased two, paid $1.50, and gotten back coupons worth $4.00 off my next order.

3. Shopping at CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid.
Each of these drugstores has their own programs. CVS has the Extracare bucks program, which you can learn about here. Walgreens has 2 programs - Register Rewards and rebates. Rite Aid has a rebates program. Many times these stores are promoting a certain item, and they will offer it "free after Extrabucks", "free after Register Rewards", or "free after rebate" on a particular week. If I use a coupon on that item, though, I will actually earn money on that item. For example, a couple weeks ago, CVS had a blood glucose monitor that was $14.99, but it gave back $5 in Extrabucks (a $5 coupon to use on another purchase). I had a coupon to get the monitor for free, so I paid only tax, and got $5 to spend on something else. (Find out more about Walgreens here and Rite Aid here.

4. Mail in rebates
Products often have "try me free" rebates, meaning that I'll get back the full price of the product. Buy those same products often also have coupons that can be used on them. If the product is $4.99 and I use a $1.00 coupon, I will only have to pay a total of $3.99, but I will get back $4.99 from the rebate. Sometimes there is a rebate for a product that I already got for free at one of the drugstores I mentioned. In that case, I would pay nothing, yet I would get back a rebate for the full price of the product.

I hope you all understand now my reasoning behind buying things I don't need. If the store or manufacturer wants to pay me to carry something out of the store, I will gladly comply! I can always find someone who needs the products I brought home. I'm happy because I got paid to bring the item home, and the person I give it to is happy because I'm giving them something they probably would have had to pay for.

Sunday Sustenance

My family and I had a lovely time hiking in the Blue Ridge mountains yesterday. I marveled at the beauty of the changing leaves and at the majesty of the mountains. But even more marvelous was the knowledge that the God Who made all of it loves me and thinks of me.

Psalm 8:3-4 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

I will never understand why the God Who is powerful enough to create such splendor loves me enough that He would send His only Son to pay for my sins. I can do nothing else than to love Him with all my heart and serve Him with my life. What about you? Have you given your life to Jesus in light of what He has done for you? Does it amaze you that the Creator God loves you and is interested in you? Read more about God's love for you here.

Crazy Coupon Capers

I had seen on Hot Coupon World that some people were finding Airborne Power Pixies on clearance at Wal-Mart, but I had forgotten all about it. As I was browsing through the clearance at my own store this week, I happened to see a big pile of them. I ran them under the scanner, and sure enough they were on clearance. For twenty-five cents! That's an awesome deal, but what made it even better is that I so happened to have 3 $2.00 coupons with me. Even though I bought 10 of them, I still got $3.50 in overage. We go through a lot of Airborne around here, so needless to say I was excited to find such a great deal on it!

My Savings This Week

The first place I went this week was to Kmart, and I found this baby swing marked down from $89 to $18. I got several - one to put up for any future children we have, one for my nephew, and one for the church nursery.

All I got at CVS was the freebies and moneymakers. I got more stuff than this, but didn't get to take a picture of my second trip. I spent $16.28 in ECBs and got back $22.26.

I went to two different Walgreens' because they didn't have everything I wanted at the first store. (Plus I forgot to get milk the first time.)

First trip: Spent $12 in RR, and $3.79 out of pocket. Between rebates and RR, I got back $10.

Second trip: Spent $3 in RR and $1.12 out of pocket. I will get back $5 in rebates.

I went to Harris Teeter twice this week, but I didn't get a picture of the second trip because my wonderful husband put everything away for me as soon as I came in the door.

First trip: I had another $5/$25 Family Dollar coupon, so I put that to good use. I found the pork roast marked down to $1.71 lb. The Sunsilk was marked down to $1.25, and I used $1.50 coupons on it. I actually (gasp!) had to pay for the Garnier hairspray after coupon even though it was clearance. I love that hairspray, though, so I got it anyway. It was on clearance for $1.02, and I used a $1.00 coupon, so I had to pay two cents for it! What a shame! My total before coupons was $35 something, and after coupons it was $14 something.

Second trip: I had yet another $5/$25 Family Dollar coupon, and I used that to do the catalina deals on the Unilever and Dove products. After coupons, I paid $6.35, and I got $8 back in catalinas. It's great when I get paid to buy groceries! (I do have to thank my wonderful mother, though. I didn't have all the coupons I needed, so I bargained with her. She gave me the coupons I needed, and she got to keep the products she gave coupons for, but I got to keep the catalinas! She loves me so much that she's been willing to take the short end of the stick my whole life!)

Don't forget to stop in on Saturday for Crazy Coupon Capers! Find out about some major overage I found at Wal-Mart, and share your coupon story too!
