If you have any $1/2 coupons (there were some in both the 4/6 and 4/13 Smartsource inserts, and I have seen quite a few blinkies in the grocery stores), the final price would be 4 for $4.

Frugal Friday

I didn't post anything yesterday, because my mom and I were doing this:

I finally got my border up in my kitchen!

My border was frugal because I only paid $1.50 per roll at Big Lots. But now I need new curtains. I would make them myself, but I'm not sure if I'll ever have make the time. :) If I can find somewhere to just buy them inexpensively, I'd rather do that. If anybody has any ideas of where I can get them at a good price, I'd love to know what you think!

Head over to Frugal Friday at Biblical Womanhood for more great frugal ideas!

Couponing Lingo and Abbreviations

This is for those of you who are wondering what in the world some of those abbreviations and terms mean!

Blinkie = A coupon from one of those machines you see in the store that blinks; the coupon machine is usually located right next to the item that it's to be used for. Looks like this:

BOGO = Buy one, get one free

Catalina (cat.) = A coupon that prints along with your receipt; usually triggered by a specific item that you purchased. Looks like this:

CRT = Cash Register Tape; a coupon that prints at the bottom of your receipt

ECB's = Extracare Bucks at CVS; go here for more information about CVS

GM = The General Mills insert from the Sunday paper

IP = Internet printable coupon

Peelie = A coupon attached to the product that you can peel off and use instantly.

PG = The Proctor and Gamble insert from the Sunday paper

RP = The Redplum insert from the Sunday paper

S = The Smartsource insert from the Sunday paper

S2 = The 2nd Smartsource insert on the weeks when there are 2.

Tearpad = A pad of coupons where you can just tear one off. These are often found on cooler doors. They may or may not be next to the item that they are to be used for.

Hope this helps some of you out!

If there's anything I missed that you're wondering about, just let me know!

Centsible Shopping at CVS - Part 1

For those of you who are unfamiliar with how advantegeous it is to shop at CVS, here's the first in a 3 part series on how to shop at CVS. In these articles you will learn how to get stuff for cheap, for free, and sometimes even get paid to buy things! I know it sounds to good to be true, but it really is true!

Sounds great! Tell me more!

How it works:

Every week CVS puts out a circular which lists the sale items. Many of those items, however, are not only on sale, but they also produce what are called Extra Care Bucks (ECB's). When you buy that particular item, a coupon will print at the bottom of your receipt that can be used toward your next purchase.

Keep in mind, though, that you cannot split up ECB's. For instance, if you have an ECB worth $3.00 and your total is only $2.00, your ECB will pay the $2.00, but you will not get the other $1.00 back. Instead, you want to make sure your total would be at least $3.00 so that you don't waste any of your ECB's.

Another thing to keep in mind is that ECB's will not pay for sales tax. If your total is $3.00 and you want to pay with $3.00 in ECB's, your subtotal might only be $2.49. Therefore, you would waste $.51 worth of ECB's. I always ask what the subtotal is to make sure I am not giving them more ECB's than I need to.

Okay, I think I understand. But how can I actually get stuff for free?

Many times it is as simple as CVS giving stuff away. No joke. If you look in the circular you might find something like X brand deodorant: buy it for $3.99, get back $3.99 ECB's. "Well, that's not free", you say, "I still have to pay $3.99 in cash." Yes you do, but you'll only have to do that on your first trip. Once you get that $3.99 back, you can use what I call your "paper money" from now on. The trick is to do what is called "rolling" your ECB's. Instead of buying anything you want for $3.99, you need to buy something else that gives back ECB's.

Sometimes, things are not necessarily free after ECB's, but if you add a coupon to the mix, then they will be. For example, you might find in the circular X brand shampoo: buy it for $4.99, get back $4.00 ECB's. Sure, a buck for a bottle of shampoo is not half bad, but why don't you check to see if you have a coupon for $1.00 off? If you do, then buy the shampoo for $4.99, use your coupon to make it $3.99, and get back $4.00 in ECB's. If you used your $3.99 ECB's from the deodorant you bought, then you didn't have to pay anything for your shampoo, and you still have $4.00 in ECB's for next time. And you actually gained a penny's worth of ECB's!

I'm liking this! Tell me more!

1. If you do not already have a CVS Extracare card, sign up in the store to get one.

2. You need to either subscribe to the Sunday paper or buy a Sunday paper every week. You will need all the coupons you can get!

3. Save every coupon whether it is for something you would normally buy or not. There will be times when it will be advantageous to buy something just because you can actually make money buying it.

4. Read this blog regularly, as well as other blogs such as Money Saving Mom. We will keep you updated as to what all the latest deals are!

5. After you get your CVS card, go to the CVS website and register your card with them. They will email CVS store coupons occasionally.

I can't wait to give this a try!

Well then, be sure to check back next Friday to read Part 2 in the series Centsible Shopping at CVS!

Money Maker at CVS This Week: Alavert

This is a hidden deal, but I am positive that it works because I just did it myself. 12 or 15 count Alevert or Alvert D is advertised as being on sale for $6.99 this week. But it is also giving back 4 ECB's. Use this $4 printable coupon to make $1.01 profit. They did not have the 12 count at my store; instead it was a bonus pack of 18. It still gave back the ECB's, though. I am pretty sure that the limit is 5 on these, but not positive because I only got 2 myself. If anyone finds out for sure what the limit is, please let us all know.

Free One Day Pass to Sam's Club

Thanks to Money Saving Mom who posted this:

Sam's Club is celebrating their 25th anniversary April 18-20, 2008 and will be giving out free passes to non-members to shop on those days. Usually there is a 10% surcharge for non-members, but during this promotion, non-members will receive the same price as members. More details here.

Thrift Store Shopping

Twice a year there is a children's consigment sale in the next town over. I needed some summer clothes for my son, so I decided to head on over there. Of course I waited until the day when everything was marked 50% off. I found a lot that I liked, but didn't really buy much because I am too cheap frugal to even pay $1.50 for something that is used. The building where the sale is held just happens to be adjacent to the Salvation Army thrift store. After the sale was over I headed over to the Salvation Army and, lo and behold, a lot of the very same things I looked at at the consignment sale were hanging on the racks in the Salvation Army. AND... it just so happened that it was half price day at the Salvation Army. I got shirts for $.55, pants for $.65, and rompers for $.80. I was excited! Maybe none of you really care how much I paid for my kid's clothes, but I do, and it's my blog, and I'm excited, so I'll blog about it whether you really wanted to know or not! All this for $11.40
Head on over to Frugal Friday at Biblical Womanhood for more great frugal ideas!

Super Savings Saturday

I got two weeks worth of groceries this week:

It's hard to see everything so I'll list everything I got.

6 loaves of French bread
4 packets cornbread mix
1 pack outlet safety covers
10 jars baby food
1 pack travel wipes
2 bags Ore Ida potatoes
2 bags onion rolls
1 bag kaiser rolls
2 bags shredded cheese
1 package bacon
5 cans vegetables
2 bags Kraft LiveActive cheese
1 cantaloupe
1 can nuts
1 can Pringles
2 packs flour tortillas
1 pack celery
1 bag romaine hearts
2 packs strawberries
5 lbs. potatoes
1 cucumber
1 lb. butter
2 bags M & M's
5 apples
1 loaf Arnold whole wheat bread
1 pack green onions
1 trial size Degree deodorant

My total for everything was $33.69. That comes out to $16.85 for a week's groceries. However, I spent about $24 on meat earlier this week. The meat should last us for a month, so that comes out to about $5.26 per week for meat. $16.85 plus $5.26 is $22.11 for a week's groceries. My goal is $25 a week, so I'm doing okay. Our budget is $150 per month, but that includes going out to eat. If I keep the actual groceries at around $100 a month, we don't have to feel like we can't ever go out.

I went to Food Lion to take advantage of the deals there, then I went to Aldi to finish up. Of course I had to go to CVS too to get my M&M's for $.15 a bag! I went to Wal-Mart to get my free Scotch-Brite toilet scrubber, but they were all out. I got the trial sized Degree there because I had a coupon for $1 off any Degree that was about to expire, so I figured I'd see if they'd let me use it on the $.97 trial size. The cashier stared at the coupon for a loooong time, and I was thinking there was no way she was going to let me use it. Finally she just shrugged her shoulders and pushed it on through. Thank you, Wal-Mart, for paying me $.03 to shop there!

10 Great Deals at Food Lion

If you're planning to use your free bakery item coupon, make sure you grab these other good deals while you're there!

1. Food Lion brand baby wipes are $1.49. Print a coupon here for $1.50 any Food Lion brand baby wipes.

2. There will also be a coupon on that same page for $2 off any Gerber accessory. There are a couple things under $2 that you can get for free. (I got the outlet safety covers.)

3. After that page prints, you will have the option to go to "Food and Formula coupons". Print those, and 2 of them will be for $1 off any Gerber baby food and $1 off 6 jars of any Beechnut baby food. There are several types of Beechnut foods on clearance for $.26. So you can get six jars for $.52! There were also Beechnut coupons in a recent insert. With the $1 off Gerber coupon, you should be able to get some food for free. Plus if you combine it with one of the BOGO Gerber coupons here or here, you should be able to get 2 things for free!

4. When I was in Food Lion last week, they had a couple kinds of Beechnut baby cereal on clearance for $1.04. There were $1 off coupons in the paper a couple weeks ago making them $.04 each!

5. Print these coupons and one of them will be for $1 off any Glad sandwich bag. The 100 count are on clearance for $1.60. When I used the coupon it scanned for $2 off though, so I got $.40 overage on these! I have heard that it has been scanning as $2 off for others as well.

6.Also, on that same page there is a coupon for $.50 off any Food Lion shredded, sliced, or chunk cheese. 8 oz. chunk and shredded cheese is on sale for $1.89 this week, so with the coupon it would be $1.39.

7.Print a coupon here for $2 off any Ore Ida frozen potato product. These are on sale this week for $2.50, so you can get a bag of fries or tater tots for $.50.

8. On that same page there is also a coupon for $2 off any 5 Food Lion brand canned vegetables. The vegetables are $.59 per can, so with the coupon you should be able to get 5 cans for $.95.

9. If you haven't used your Kraft cheese coupons yet, Food Lion would be good place to use them. The cheese is $2.99, but when you purchase one you will get a $2 coupon to use on your next order. So buy one at $2.99, use the $2 coupon, and get $2 off your next order.

10. And last but not least, here's a coupon for another free bakery item. This time it's good for up to $3.00.

Troubleshooting Printable Coupons

Several of you have mentioned that you are unable to print coupons from bricks.coupons links. I have both Firefox and Internet Explorer on my computer. If a coupon won't print in one browser, I try it in the other browser. Nine times out of ten I am able to print in the opposite browser. You can also request that the coupon be mailed to you if you cannot get it to print. If you look in the lower right hand corner on the page that has the "print now" button, you will see a place to click on "help". If you click that, you can submit your address and they will mail the coupon to you. I hope this information is beneficial to everyone!

Good Deal on Kraft Cheese at Wal-Mart

There is a printable coupon here for $2 off 1 package of Kraft LiveActive cheese snacks. I have heard talk that these are marked down to $2.25 at Wal-Mart, but even if they aren't, the regular price wben I bought them before was $2.77. I would be happy to pay either $.25 or $.77 for these (I believe the bag is 7 ounces). I am pretty sure this is a new link, because when these coupons first came out, I printed from at least 5 different links, but I was just able to print from the one I posted. I would be interested to know if any of you try it and if it works for you.

I was out several times this week, so I stopped at quite a few stores.

My first stop was at Wal-Mart. Here's what I got:2 Malt-O-Meal cereals @ $1.00 each Used 2 $1.50 coupons
4 Honey Bunches of Oats @ $2.00 each Used 4 $2.00 coupons
3 Zantac @ $4.23 each Used 3 $5.00 coupons
1 Scotch-Brite toilet scrubber @ $4.67 Used FREE coupon
1 Nivea shaving lotion clearanced to $1.00 Used $2.00 coupon
4 Huggies cleanteam wipes @ $1.64 Used 4 $3/2 coupons
Gift card for $100.00
Total: $96.00

Earned : $4.00

Next stop was CVS. I picked up 3 CVS brand pain relievers.
Used a $2/$10 CVS brand purchase
Total was $9.97 (Paid in ECB's and gift card)
Received $11.97 in ECB's

Earned: $2.00

Another day I went to Wal-Mart again. It wasn't so good that time because they wouldn't let me use my $1.50 Malt-o-Meal coupons or my $5 Zantac coupons. I had figured I would have about $4.00 in overage so I picked out a toy for my son, but I ended up having to pay for it. I got:

6 bags Malt-O-Meal @ 1.00 each Used 6 $1.00 coupons
1 baby toy @ 3.97
Total = $4.67
Lost: $4.67

Next was Walgreens. This didn't go so great either. The register did not ring up everything properly. I would have had close to $0.00 out of pocket and been eligible for over $10.00 in rebates, but I ended up paying about $7.00 out of pocket because of the register messing up. I didn't have time to go back in that day, but I will probably return the stuff that did not ring up correctly. Even if I don't return it I will still have made money after I get the rebates.

Earned: at least $3.00

Next, another CVS run. Here's the stuff I got:

(Plus 2 Covergirl TruBlend and 3 Essence of Beauty gift bags I forgot to put in the picture.)

Total : $39.49 (paid in ECB's and gift card)
Received back $27 in ECB's

Lost: $12.49

Then I went to Food Lion. Here's what I got:

2 Beechnut cereals on closeout for $1.04 Used 2 $1.00 coupons
2 packs onion rolls @ $2.49 each Used FREE bakery item up to $4.99
26 jars and packs of baby food
on closeout for $0.23 and $0.37 each. Used several coupons
1 pack Food Lion travel wipes @ $1.49 Used Food Lion coupon for $1.50 off FL wipes
1 package outlet covers @ 1.39 Used Food Lion coupon for $2.00 off accessories
1 package chicken breasts @ $4.14 Used Food Lion coupon for $1.00 off chicken breasts

Total: $5.39

Lost: $5.39

Lastly, I took one final CVS run to finish out the baby deal and the Dove/beauty deal. Here's what I got:

Total : $26.83 (Paid in ECB's and gift card)
Got back $47 in ECB's

Earned: $20.17

IF YOU ADD UP ALL THE NUMBERS OF WHAT I EARNED AND LOST ON EACH STORE, I GOT PAID $6.62 TO DO ALL MY SHOPPING THIS WEEK!!!

"Un-Frugal" Product Review

It's Frugal Friday at Biblical Womanhood, and I thought I'd share a product that I found to be "un-frugal." A couple months ago I was in need of some laundry stain remover. I used to buy it at Big Lots for about $2.00 (before I discovered I could probably find a way to get it free at CVS). I had a coupon for Zout, though, so I thought I'd check the price and see if I could get it cheaper than the Big Lots kind. It came out to about the same price as the Big Lots kind, so I thought I might as well give it a try. I quickly discovered that I did not get my money's worth. It takes stains out just fine, but it has only one setting: JET STREAM. If I had an area of any substantial size that I needed to treat, I had to use a LOT of sprays to cover the whole area. After about a week of normal use, the bottle was about half gone. Normal use for us is not much. I don't think I will be buying the Zout brand any more (unless it costs about a dime or less) :). Has anybody else tried it? I'd like to know what you thought of it.
Be sure to check out Frugal Friday for lots of great ideas!

How to Get $14.99 worth of FREE Extra Bucks at CVS

1. Buy one Breeze 2 glucose meter at $14.99 the week of April 13-19.

2. Use a $30 off coupon that you got from the 3-16 Smartsource #2. (The cashier will adjust the coupon amount down to $14.99.)

3. Get back $14.99 in Extra Bucks

If you do not have a $30 off coupon, DON'T WORRY! You can order one for just $1! Click on the Coupon Clippers link below, click on "coupons", click on the "hot" tab, then scroll down until you see the coupon for the Breeze 2. The Coupon Clippers require a minimum order of $3, so go ahead and pick out a few more coupons while you're there. If you subtract the $1 that you spend on your coupon, you can still make $13.99 on the meter. The Coupon Clippers ship very quickly, so if you order soon, you can still get your coupon in time to use it next week. Just check their FAQ's page to find out their shipping schedule. Well, what are you waiting for?! Go get your coupon!

The Coupon Clippers

Update: Please pardon my mistake! The Extra Bucks are not for the Breeze 2 monitor. They are for the Contour monitor. Hopefully none of you have bought the wrong one! If you got the coupon I told you about, you are still good to go because it is good for either the Breeze 2 or the Contour monitor.

Get Paid to Buy Cereal at Wal-Mart

Certain flavors of Malt-O-Meal cereal are on rollback this week 2 for $2. Use this coupon for $1.50 off to make $.50 per bag! Plus, go ahead and get some more for free using this $1 off coupon! I know a lot of people hate to go to Wal-Mart, but I just can't help myself when they're going to pay me to shop there! (Depending on your cashier and your Wal-Mart, they may or may not give you the overage, but you can still get the cereal for free. I've never had any problem getting overage at my Wal-Mart.)

Please Be Patient With Us!

We are in the process of moving our blog, and we have a lot of other things going on this week as well. Hopefully we will have the new blog ready in the next couple of days, but until then we will probably not be posting as often as we typically do. Please be patient with us!

CVS Moneymakers for April 6-12

I have been trying to plan out my CVS trips for this week, but I can't really know for sure what I'm going to do until I find out if the $.99 Johnson's Buddies soaps and Johnson's shampoos are included in the Buy $25, get $10 ECB's deal. Oh, I hope, I hope, I hope! I am going to buy one first and see if it shows up on my receipt as counting towards the deal.

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about:
Johnson's Buddies soaps are $.99 each at CVS. There are printable coupons for $1 off (Money Saving Mom has the info on that). There is a deal at CVS this week where if you buy $25 worth of certain baby products, you get back $10 in ECB's. If the Johson's Buddies and shampoo count toward the deal, I will be able to work my way up to that $25 worth without paying anything for the Johnson's stuff.

Anyway, like I said, I don't know exactly how I'll be working my deals this week, but there are a couple of things I for sure will be getting because they are money makers.

1. Excedrin (Limit 5)
Sale price is $1.99
Use $2 coupons
Get $1 ECB back on each

2. Pepcid EZ chews (Limit 5)
Sale price is $7.99
Use $2 coupon coming out in this week's Redplum
Get $5 ECB's back (This is a monthly deal, but it's best to do it this week because they are on sale.)
Send in MIR for the full amount back (will be in this week's Redplum)

I'll let everybody know what the verdict is on the Johnson's Buddies and shampoo as soon as I find out!

New to CVS? Check out Money Saving Mom's CVS 101.

Super Savings Saturday

I didn't do much shopping this week because I didn't really need anything after last week's awesome deals!

But, I did make three trips to CVS.

Trip #1: 5 Softsoap Spa bodywashes, 6 Colgate Total toothpastes
Total = $20.42
ECB's back = $24.95
(I've got to call CS about getting my ECB's on the Colgate for the monthly deal. The weekly BOGO deal must have messed up the monthly deal. Did this happen to anyone else?)

Trip #2: 1 package Glucerna shakes, 1 jumbo pack Pampers
Total = $.48
ECB's back = $2
(I bought $15 worth of BeFine products, but returned them later because the ECB's didn't print. But I was able to use a $3/15 beauty coupon; that's why my total was so low.)

Trip #3: 3 packs Glucerna shakes, 2 Windex, 2 Shout, 1 Scrubbing Bubbles, 1 Palmolive
Total = $2.20
ECB's back = $12
($1 ECB was from my 1st quarter earnings.)
