$0.50/1 Land O’ Lakes spreadable butter

I love this stuff!  We are a 100% real butter family and I love that I can spread this straight out of the fridge.

Print a $0.50/1 coupon for Land O’ Lakes spreadable butter.  This can go on sale for $1.00 quite frequently which would make it FREE after coupon!

Join us on our *new* facebook page!

When you start blogging, it is a lot of trial and error, googling searching with swagbucks to find answers, and making your fair share of mistakes along the way.

One of my mistakes was setting up a facebook personal profile (“friend” page) for my Centsible Savings facebook instead of a facebook page (“like” page).  There are a lot more options for a business to have a “like” page versus a “friend” page, so… I am finally taking the plunge and switching.

You can now head over and “like” our new page!

Fullscreen capture 5312011 122059 PM.bmp

All of the deals, tips, posts will be posted over there and the old page will be shutting down as soon as everyone gets a chance to switch over.

To thank you for switching over (and putting up with my mistakes along the way!), I will be hosting a giveaway of a month’s worth of coupons inserts!  For every 250 fans we get (so at 250, 500, 750 fans and so on…), I will post a quick giveaway (over on the new facebook page.)

So share the new page with your friends and then hang out and wait for the giveaway! :)

And thanks again for reading Centsible Savings!

Thrifty Thursday: Fun yardsale finds

DSC_1598
Here’s some fun stuff I found while yardsaling last week.

The metal wall hangings were $3 for the pair.  (Love metal wall hangings!  These might find a home on my deck or maybe even my front porch.)

The large plaster wall hanging has a Kirkland’s sticker for $9.99 on the back, but I paid $1.00!

The white (of course!) wood shelf was $1.00 and already has a home on a dark brown wall in my living room.  It goes perfect and I love the detailed carvings!  I will have to show you soon.

The white decorative finial and decor ball were $0.50 each.  The finial will probably get a paint job – either white (since it is sort of yellowed looking) or ORB – what do you think?

Last weekend there were yardsales EVERYWHERE!  I typically just stick to my favorite multi-seller, parking lot yardsale and a quick stop at the flea market, but I could have shopped till I dropped last weekend!

Have you found anything good while shopping yardsales or Goodwill recently?

Extreme vs. Centsible Couponing: How to organize your coupons

centsible couponing button

This post will help dispel another coupon myth - “I don’t have time to coupon.”  Which I think what they are actually saying with that statement is they don’t have time to sit down and cut out every coupon from the coupon inserts that come out each Sunday.

If I had to cut out every coupon from each Sunday’s paper, I wouldn’t have time to coupon either!!  But I DO coupon and save a lot!

Here’s how:

I DON’T cut coupons! :)

Well, until I actually get ready to use them, that is! :)

Remember I shared that I get multiple coupon inserts each week and there is NO WAY that I have time, nor do I want to cut each coupon out.

I use the No-cut or whole insert method”

(or as I like to call it, the "cut it when you need it method!:)

DSC_0139

Each Sunday, I browse through the coupon inserts that came out that day and make a mental note of the coupons in it.  If there are any “FREE coupons” or a coupon that I will use regardless of whether the product is on sale, I go ahead and cut them right then (this is probably 1-3 coupons each week.)  Each insert gets rubber banded together by type and date (5/10 SS together, 5/10 RP together, etc.) and labeled with the date on a sticky note stuck on the bottom edge as my “tab.”  (You can find the date on the spine of the coupon insert.)  I fill them by date in a stacker system.

DSC_0140
Then, when I print out my shopping list (I will share where I do this in another post), I just pull the insert stack where the coupon is located, cut as many coupons as I want, and file the stack back.  So I am only cutting the coupons that I need, WHEN I need them!  That is why you will see me say here on this blog,  “Use $1.00/1 coupon from 5/15 SS" – meaning you can find the coupon in the May 15th Smartsource insert.

What do I do with the coupons I have now cut out?

The polka dot expandable file is for CVS and the blue file is for grocery stores.  I file cut coupons in these binders.

DSC_0141

Not by food type such as dairy, frozen, canned goods; but by store (since I already have my list and know which store I am going to use that coupon at.)

DSC_0146

Blinkie coupons, FREE coupons, coupons I find in store, coupons I printed but won’t use this week, etc. get filed in the front pocket or behind the store pockets.

My CVS expandable file sections are divided by:
  • this week’s coupons
  • rainchecks
  • ECB’s (or Extracare Bucks = CVS $)
  • CVS coupons (from the coupon printer)
DSC_0148

This is the method I highly recommend!!  It could be organized in hanging file folders, smaller stackers, in a notebook with pocket, or many other ways!

There are also 2 other coupon organizational methods:

“Coupon binder method”

You cut every coupon from the Sunday paper and file them in baseball card holder sleeves organized by category in a large 3-ring binder.

The one advantage to this method is that you can take your whole binder to the store with you, so if you found a clearance or unadvertised deal you have the coupon with you (which I would not! :)

But you are going to spend a good amount of time cutting coupons (even if you only get 1-2 inserts) and will probably  end up only actually using less than half of those coupons.

“Expandable file method”

Basically the same method as above.  You cut all your coupons each week and filed them into an expandable file (like the ones I showed above just with more categories and/or pockets.)

Once again, one advantage is you have all the coupons with you when you are at the store.

One more thing about cutting your coupons before you need them…

Once you make your list or print your list, you would still have to pull the coupons that you need from your binder or file.  With 8-12 weeks of un-expired cut coupons in your binder or file, that is a lot of coupons to sort through to find the one that you are looking for!   I have seen many people in the store with their huge binder across the cart hunting for coupons.  While I have my stack of coupons in hand that I plan to use and nothing else!

Bottom line, you have to do what works best for you.

If you are happy with the method you currently use, then use it!  If you are just starting out, try one method for a while and see if you like it, if not try another method!

What method do you use and why?

Extreme vs. Centsible Couponing: Where to find your coupons

centsible couponing button

So if you haven’t already figured out from the previous posts in this series, you need to have as many coupons as as you can get your hands on.  That way when something that you use/want goes on sale, you can buy more than one item and stockpile it for future use!

But where are you going to find all of these coupons and then how are you going to keep them organized in your house and in the store?

There are THREE main places you will find coupons:

1. Newspaper coupons (this is going to be the large majority of coupons you will use.)
  • The Sunday paper is going to be your #1 main source!
You will want to subscribe to home delivery for the largest cities paper in your area or pick up a copy at the store on Monday.  Notice I said the largest city near you.  I live in a suburb of Atlanta that has it’s own city paper that does have coupons on Sunday, but that local paper only carries the Smartsource (SS) insert, NO Redplum (RP), NO Proctor + Gamble (PG).  But the Atlanta paper (Atlanta Journal + Constitution) carries all the inserts and one of the best (most) coupon inserts available nationwide.  So I subscribe to the Atlanta paper! I also have a family member that works for our local paper, so I am able to get the unsold Sunday and pull the SS inserts out of them.  There is also a FREE Hispanic newspaper that comes out in our area that contains the same coupon inserts (although some are in Spanish!), so I make sure to pick up some of those too!

If you don’t have any other way of getting your coupons from a Sunday paper for FREE, I have seen and recommend that you buy 1 paper/set coupon inserts per person in your family.  So family of 2 = 2 sets of coupon inserts, family of 5 = 5 sets of coupon inserts.

Ask friends, people at church, family members to save their coupon inserts for you if they don’t use them.  Check coffee shops, your local library, and post office for extra coupon inserts.
  • Check newspaper recycle bins.
The ones on your street if you have local pickup or the ones at the transfer stations/landfill.  In other words, dumpster dive! :)  (I have done it before, it is really not all that gross since it is just newspapers in the bin :)
  • Buy extra single coupons from a coupon clipping service or on Ebay.

  • Buy whole inserts online.
2. Coupons in the store.
  • “Peelies, tear pads, blinkies'” – Finding these is like a scavenger hunt in the store.  If you take your kids shopping with you and they are old enough, teach them what these three types of coupons are and make it their job to find them while you are shopping! :)  “Peelies” are the coupons attached to the product that you peel off (usually when you actually buy that product.)  “Tear pads” are just that – a pad of coupons that you tear off the coupons.  And “blinkies” are the little red coupon dispenser boxes that you sometimes see throughout the store.

  • Store coupons.  Another reason why I LOVE Publix is they literally throw coupons at you when you walk in the store! :)   All throughout the store their will be display racks with coupon booklets or sheets.  Pick a few up, use any of you want right then, and SAVE for later when their might even be a better sale!
3. Printable coupons!
Printable coupons are becoming more and more popular.  Many companies host printable coupons on their website or on their companies facebook page.  I post links to lots of these coupons especially when they are high value or for a product that is on sale right now.  Sometimes you can just google - “printable coupon for ____________” and if there is a printable coupon it will come up as one of the options.

Then there are 3 major websites where you can print coupons:

This post has already gotten long enough so I think I will share "How to organize your coupons" in part 2 tomorrow!

If you have any other places where you find coupons, tell us in the comments!

Kroger: earn points and get up to $1.00 off each gallon of gas!

Kroger is changing their fuel discount program for the better!  You used to only get 10¢ off a gallon (valid for 1 fill-up) for every 100 points ($100 in groceries) that you spent (before coupons! :)  And if you had 300 points you had 3 separate 10¢ discounts for 3 different fill ups.

Now, the points you earn + fuel discounts will add up!

100 points = 10¢ off a gallon,

200 points = 20¢ off a gallon,

up to 1000 points (earned in 1 month) = $1.00 off a gallon for an entire fill up!

Just to remind you there are more ways you can earn points than just buying groceries:

  • $100 in groceries = 100 points (10¢/gallon)
  • $50 in gift cards = 100 points
  • 2 prescriptions filled (not paid for with government healthcare) = 100 points

And some Shell gas stations are also participating for redeeming your gas points.  (We have one near us that is – there are signs posted and you must scan your Kroger card or enter your phone #.)

Check out your area to make sure they are participating and terms/conditions.

Here’s an idea: Buy a $50 Shell gift card at Kroger with the rest of your groceries, then use it combined with 100 points you earned from buying $100 worth of groceries to get a 20¢ discount per gallon on a single fill up!

Tasty Tuesday: Chocolate Velvet Pound Cake

Mmmm…eating a piece for breakfast as I type this post! :)
DSC_0124

(Don’t tell me you have never eaten chocolate cake for breakfast – it has eggs, milk, butter – all the necessary ingredients for breakfast with a little chocolate mixed in! :)

I have a small cake business, but most of the time I don’t get to eat any of the cakes that I have made! :)  So sometimes, I get the craving to make a cake, and eat it too! :)

I was in a chocolate-craving-mood yesterday and my eyes fell upon this cookbook I have displayed on my kitchen counter.

DSC_0128

The cake on the front looks delicious, but I was not wanting to fuss with 3 layers and icing a cake since I do that all… the... time.

I looked through the book and found this beauty – Chocolate Velvet Pound cake.

Chocolate Velvet "Pound" Cake Recipe

Bake it, dump it out of the pan and dust with sugar or drizzle with ganache – EASY and so good!  That is what I was wanting!

Here’s the link to the recipe but I will share it here too:

Chocolate Velvet Pound cake
  • 1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate morsels
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 (16-ounce) package light brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (8-ounce) container sour cream
  • 1 cup hot water I used milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Melt semisweet chocolate morsels in a microwave-safe bowl at HIGH for 30-second intervals until melted (about 1 1/2 minutes total time). Stir until smooth.

Beat butter and brown sugar at medium speed with an electric mixer, beating about 5 minutes or until well blended. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating just until blended after each addition. Add melted chocolate, beating just until blended.

Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add to chocolate mixture alternately with sour cream, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat at low speed just until blended after each addition. Gradually add 1 cup hot water milk in a slow, steady stream, beating at low speed just until blended. Stir in vanilla.
Spoon batter evenly into a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan bundt pan! :) Bake at 350° for 55 to 65 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack 10 minutes. Remove from pan, and let cool completely on wire rack.

I baked my cake in a bundt pan.  For one reason, because that is the pan that I have, and another reason, I LOVE the look of a bundt cake and the fact that the pan does all the decorating for me! :)

Then I whipped up this easy chocolate ganache recipe.  (Only 3 ingredients – butter, chocolate, and cream.)

DSC_0112

I topped it with fresh strawberries and a scoop of vanilla ice cream and savored devoured every bite!

DSC_0117

It is moist, tender, rich, and delicious!!! The perfect chocolate pound cake for the summer to top with fresh fruit or ice cream!

Let me know if you see any really good deals this week with this gas card deal.

CVS FREE gas promotion – earn $10 in free gas each week!

Here is some great news to help you will the rising gas costs.

CVS launched a new FREE gas program where shoppers can get a FREE $10 gift card to Exxon/Mobil, Shell, BP Amoco or BP Arco every week by spending $30 on specially-marked items found in the weekly CVS ad. The qualifying products will change each week and should will be marked with a “get free gas” tag.

Your $30 total is before coupons are deducted.  So you can use coupons to reduce the amount you will actually pay (super excited about that!)  Once you reach the $30 minimum purchase total each week, a special coupon will print on your receipt that can be redeemed immediately in store for a $10 gas card. You can purchase your items in different transactions (the bottom of your receipt will keep track of your running total.)  BUT your total will not carry over to the next week so make sure get to your $30 total in by the end of the week.

Here’s the rest of the rules: the coupon must be redeemed within 30 days for the gas card, so you might want to just go ahead and get it right then.  You can only earn and redeem one coupon for a $10 gift card per week.   Promotion runs May 22 - August 28, 2011.

I will post a separate CVS FREE gas post each week with the participating products each week and coupon matchups.
