I Made $19.20 at Walgreens!

I had resigned myself to not being able to use that $10/$40 coupon last weekend because we only have one vehicle right now, so I don't usually get to go out except on my regularly planned grocery day. Saturday afternoon it all the sudden dawned on me, "Hey, hubby's home today. That means the car is here. That means I can go somewhere. Hey, I can go to Walgreens!" So I hurriedly threw a bunch of coupons in an envelope to see how I could do on a spur of the moment trip. Well, it turned out pretty good! I did 3 different transactions.

I got the monitors because I had coupons to get them for free. That got my total up high enough where I could get the John Frieda for free to check if the RR were still working.
Total = $2.16 (tax)
RR received = $9.00
Total profit = $6.84

Total = $18.29
RR received = $9 for John Frieda, $2 for Huggies
Rebates = $11.98 +10% = $13.18
Total profit = $5.89

I forgot that the Revitalift was on sale, so my total wasn't up to $40 when I checked out. I ran and grabbed the milk, and the $10/$40 still wouldn't work. The manager came over and told me it must be because my total before tax still wasn't high enough. I asked him how much more I needed and he said "I don't know. Just get something and we'll see if the total is high enough." I would have preferred not to do that, but I didn't want to be rude, so I just got the cereal. It wasn't a big deal because it is something we will use.
Total = $32.70
Rebates = $35.61 +10% = $39.17
Total profit = $6.47

Total profit for all 3 transactions = $19.20

While the purpose of my blog is to keep you updated with the latest deals, that is not my purpose in life. Bargain hunting can be a lot of fun, and of course it is a great help to our finances, but snagging even the greatest of deals will never satisfy our souls. Jesus said, "I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst." John 6:35 The salvation that Christ offers is the only true way to experience joy, peace, and fulfillment. We also find in the Word of God that "man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God." Nothing that we can do, whether it be entertainment, hobbies, or even bargain hunting, will ever bring us true satisfaction. Our lives should be characterized by a steady walk with the Lord as we read His Word each day and spend time alone with Him in prayer. It is through this relationship with God that we find sustenance for our daily lives.

Philippians 4:4

"Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice."

We had evangelist Morris Gleiser preach at our church Wednesday night. He preached from Philippians 4:4 a message on "Head Turning Joy". His emphasis was that no matter where you are or what circumstances you are under, others should always be able to see the joy of the Lord in your life. True joy can only come from a relationship with Jesus Christ, and knowing for sure that your sins are forgiven. If you don't have that assurance, you can read more about it here. If you do know for sure that your sins are forgiven and you're on your way to heaven, do you have "head turning joy" that points others to the Savior?

Feel free to link in and share what the Lord is doing in your life. You can grab the code for the button at the top of this post, and add your name and url to the Mr. Linky below.

My Savings This Week

I forgot to take pictures of my CVS deals this week, but I just stopped in to pick up the freebies. I used $14.99 in ECB's, and got back $16.98. I can't remember my total out of pocket, but it was just a few cents.
Now, on to the Walgreens picture. This proves how crazy I have become since I started couponing. What in the world do the cashiers think when I buy Preparation H every time I'm in the store?! I exercised moderation this time and only bought 2 (actually I found out the first time that the registers won't accept more than 2 of the coupons). Anyway, on to the financial details...2 John Frieda hair care at Buy One Get one 50% off = $9.74
2 Preparation H at $3.99 each = $7.98
Total before coupons = $17.72
Used $3/2 John Frieda coupon
Used (2) $3 Preparation H coupons
Used (2) $2 Easysaver coupons for Preparation H
Total after coupons = $4.72

Okay, that's nice. But wait! Look what I got!

Yup. I paid $4.72 and got back $9 in Register Rewards. This is why I buy things I don't need. I really didn't need either of these items, but why shouln't I carry them out of the store when I'm getting paid to do it?

Next up, Food Lion. I thought this was a good enough deal that I actually posted about how you can do it yourself.

Total before coupons and instant savings = $10.28
Used (2) $.50 Nature Valley coupons
Used $.50/2 Betty Crocker coupon
$6 Instant Savings from Food Lion
Total after coupons and instant savings = $2.78

Finally, I grabbed a couple things at Harris Teeter.

Total before coupons = $7.68
Used (2) $.75 Cheerios coupons
Used $.55 Dixie Crystals coupon
Used $.75 Cheese coupon
Total after coupons = $2.07

Where is Your Treasure?

While there is nothing wrong at all with getting excited over the great deals you find, you must not let that excitement cloud your focus. No matter how many free or incredibly inexpensive things you are able to accumulate, they will not last. Food will get eaten, clothes will wear out, and other goods will be stolen, rusted, or eaten by moths. But the treasures you lay up in heaven will last for eternity (Matthew 6:19-20). Do you get so focused on the excitement of a great deal that you forget to give the cashiers a tract or talk to them about the Lord? You may take home a whole cart load of earthly treasures, but you will lose out on the opportunity to lay up for yourself an eternal treasure. Are you so concerned with making sure the cashiers accept all your coupons that you find yourself speaking unkindly to them? Wouldn't it be better to just let it go instead of ruining your chance to share the gospel with them? Do you try so hard to "work a deal" that you are tempted to be dishonest in the use of your coupons? (Dana from Frugal in Virginia addresses this issue in her guest post at Keeping the Kingdom First.) You may receive some temporary satisfaction from your "earthly treasure", but it will not be worth it in comparison to the shame you experience when you stand before Christ. As you seek to please God in the use of your finances, make sure you please Him in your actions as well.

Feel free to link in and share what the Lord is doing in your life. You can grab the code for the button at the top of this post, and add your name and url to the Mr. Linky below.

Reader Input Requested

There has been a coupon around for quite a while for $2 off any CVS Skincare product. (Unfortunately, the link to print it is no longer online, but some folks are still finding it in their stores.)

Judy asks:

I have a $2.00 off any CVS brand skin care coupon. EXACTLY what can this be used on? I have read on other blogs that some even use it for CVS cotton swabs(?) I think they bought like the trial size to get their total up to do the $2/$10 and then can use the $2 off skin care too. Can you use more than one on a single transaction? It is my hope than you can give me some kind of a"list" on what it will work on. I will assume body lotions, hand creams,face creams but is there more? How about hand sanitizer or makeup remover or shaving cream?

My answer is :

1. No, you cannot use more than one per transaction. The fine print states that it is one per customer, and I believe it will beep if you try to use more than one.

2. I have personally used it on CVS cotton swabs (both regular and trial size) and single bar soaps. The trial size cotton swabs are $.50, producing $1.50 in overage, and the single bar soaps are $.79, producing $1.21 in overage.

Now, for your part...

2 items is not a very big list for Judy to work with. Let's expand that list! Please leave a comment letting us know the items on which you have successfully used the $2.00 skincare coupon.

Walgreens $5/$20 Coupon - Friday and Saturday Only

Here's a coupon for $5 off a $20 purchase. Go here to print it. If you haven't bought your August Free After Rebate stuff yet, now would be the time to do it!

My Savings This Week

There wasn't much I wanted at CVS this week, but I did work a deal for some milk.
Total after coupons = $6.27
Used $6 ECB's
Total oop = $.27 plus tax
Received $5 ECB's for the Revlon mascara

I had quite a few coupons that are expiring soon, so I decided to go ahead and use them at
Wal-Mart. I was going to pick up some more All You magazines, but every last one of them was gone! I think I know who bought them all too! (Hi, Christa! :) No worries, though. I wasn't completely sure I wanted to get them anyway, so I guess my decision was made for me.Luvs diapers - pricematched Target at $6.99; used $5.00 coupon = $1.99
Kashi Vive cereal; used coupon for free box = $0.00
3 Planters and Koolaid; used 3 Planters coupons = $2.66
Lance crackers - $2.00; used $1.00 coupon = $1.00
Land o' Frost lunchmeat - $3.98; used $.55 coupon = $3.43
Kraft Cheese and Koolaid; used free Kraft coupon = $.40
Total = $9.48 plus tax

I knew Walgreens would come out with a coupon as soon as I did my shopping! My total was $5.01, so if I would have had the coupon, my total would have been $.01! Oh well!2 Cheerios - $1.99 - (2) $1.00 coupons = $1.98
2 Hefty Bags; $2.79 for 2 - $.20 and $1.00 coupons = $1.59
Pert Plus; $3.79 - $2.00 coupon = $1.79
4 Bic Pens; Used Rain check for 2/$1 and $1/2 coupon = $0.00

All of this adds up to $5.36, so don't ask me why my total including tax was $5.01, because I don't have a clue! If there is one thing I have noticed about Walgreens, it is that something rings up wrong every single time I go. The cashiers know how I feel about this, and now they just stand there and wait for me to check my receipt because they know they're probably going to have to fix something. Twice, though, the error has been in my favor, and they have just let it go. I don't complain! I'll be getting a $3.79 rebate on the Pert Plus too, so after the rebate, I will only have paid $1.22 for all this.

I didn't get anything special at Harris Teeter. I just picked up a couple things I needed. (Yes, I needed the frozen pizza so I didn't have to cook when I got home. :) I bought the toothbrush because it yielded $.50 in overage, and the wax paper was $.25 after coupon.

What's the Next Best Thing to Dumpster Diving?

Trash can diving!
Common Sense with Money recently posted an article on How to Get Multiple Coupon Inserts. One of ways people find extra inserts is to look in the dumpsters! I have personally never done this (although if you're just looking in the newspaper recycling bin, it shouldn't really be gross). But last night it wasn't beyond me to look in the trash cans at my grocery store's self-checkout. (That wasn't gross either; it was just paper.) Look what I found!

A whole pile of catalinas, one of them for a free Sobe water! I always make it a habit to look at all the machines to make sure no one has left any catalinas there, and I have more than once found catalinas for free products. But this was the first time I've ever looked in the trash can! Oh, what has this world of couponing done to me?!

With this in mind, I have decided to introduce this new element to my blog. Every Sunday I will share a short praise, exhortation, or Bible verse, or a link to a message from God's Word.
For this week, I thought I'd share the link to the entire sermon archives from my church's website. I'm sure you'll find the messages to be a blessing.

Feel free to link in and share what the Lord is doing in your life! You can grab the code for the button at the top of this post, and add your name and url to the Mr. Linky below.

Free Blueberry Muffin Mini Wheats

Christa wrote me to tell me she spotted the Blueberry Muffin Mini Wheats at Ingles with a Try Me Free rebate form on them. These have also been seen in Harris Teeter and Wal-Mart, and I would assume they are in other stores as well. If you got the August All You magazine, there was a $1.00 coupon in there for the Blueberry Mini Wheats, which would make this deal a money-maker. You should still be able to get the August All You at Wal-Mart. It is located at the checkout, and the price is $1.77. (It says $1.97 on the cover, but Wal-Mart discounts it to $1.77.) Here's what it looks like:
I would highly recommend getting this magazine this month, because not only does it have the Mini Wheats coupon, it has coupons for Free Kraft cheese, Oscar Mayer Hot Dogs, Wheat Thins, Kraft Dressing, and Crystal Light. You have to buy 3 items from the Kraft family to get the free product, but Kool-aid packets or boxes of Jello work great!
