Décor on a Dime: Update your vents covers for cheap

Do your vent covers looks a little like this?  Yuck!  Besides needing to be cleaned, this one has seen better days.

DSC_0538

I was dreaming of Oil Rubbed Bronze vent covers, BUT on a budget!  Welcome my favorite friend, Krylon Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint!

I had 7 in-floor vent covers downstairs.  I took them all out, washed them, and laid them outside to dry.

Then the painting began…

DSC_0556

I did 2 light coats and that seemed to cover them great!  I was spray painting several other things as well, but not including drying time this project took less than 30 minutes.  And I didn’t even use a whole can of spray paint, so this project cost less than $3.00!

(While they were drying, I vacuumed out all of the vents!  Yuck!  I think some of this dirt was from the previous owners!)

So here are all 7 vents before and after!

Amazing what a little spray paint can do!  Even though they weren’t bad and brassy, I am liking the ORB change! :)

Tasty Tuesday: Almost free, super yummy Creamy Bacon + Veggie Fettuccine

DSC_1100I have been promising to share with you some of the yummy recipes I have been making with the new Philadelphia Cooking Creme that I have been raving about on facebook! :)  I stocked up on quite a few of the cooking cremes for $0.50 at Publix and Kroger over the last 2 weeks.

On top of the Italian Herbs & Cheese Cooking Creme was a a little pamphlet of recipes.  Since I had also gotten a bunch of free pasta at Kroger, the Creamy Bacon Fettucine recipe caught my eye. :)

You can check out Kraft’s version here, but I will share my variations with you.

  • Ronzoni Garden Delight fettucine noodles (my husband and I actually really like these!) - FREE.
  • 1 cont. Italian Herbs & Cheese cooking creme – $0.50
  • 1 bag of frozen mixed Steamfresh veggies (instead of just peas) – FREE
  • 4 strips of turkey bacon - $0.50?
  • milk, flour, salt, pepper – on hand

I cooked the noodles, while the veggies were steaming in the microwave, and the bacon was cooking.  I warmed the cooking creme and probably added a cup of milk to thin and then a tablespoon of flour to thicken and seasoned with salt/pepper.  When everything was done, I tossed it all together, crumbled the bacon on top, and served it along with some homemade cheesy garlic biscuits!    It was super yummy!! And so easy!

We got 5+ servings out of this and the whole meal cost under $2.00!

Have you tried anything with the new Philadelphia Cooking Creme?  I haven’t tried anything that we haven’t loved yet! :)

3/26 Coupon savings!

So, I have mentioned before that my weekly grocery budget goal is $40 (that includes EVERYTHING from cat food/litter, toilet paper, etc.) except for what I get at CVS/Walgreens/RiteAid (for which I set a $15 monthly budget to pay for tax, etc. but usually don’t spend all of that.)

I don’t necessarily only spend $40 each week, but rather an average of $40 a week for the entire month.  Because some weeks will be GREAT stock up weeks and I might spend $60 that week.  But then the next week is a slow week and I only spend $20 at Aldi.  But I have been averaging more like $45-50 some months and wanted to challenge myself to stay BELOW my $40 budget and just really strive to save our family more money.  (Since more money is going in the gas tank each week! :(

This week was a great stock up week with the Kroger mega sale but a slow week at Publix.

Here’s how I did:

Aldi
DSC_1051

spent $14.34

Kroger
DSC_1089

The majority of what I bought was free or gave me overage (pasta, dip)

Total: $54.37
- $15.00 mega savings
-$33.75 in coupons
I paid $5.62! :)  ($1.26 of that was tax.)

That is 89% savings!!  Gotta love Kroger mega sales!

Publix
DSC_1086

The plant is basil.  I wanted some basil for a recipe I will share on Monday, and I could buy a bag of pre-cut for $1.99 or plant that will keep growing more basil (and look pretty on my counter) for $1.99 – EASY decision! :)

Total $40.20
- $26.50 in coupons
I paid $13.70
-$6.99 rebate for cat litter
Actual cost $6.71

(I will submit for a rebate on the cat litter for $6.99, and I used a $3.00 coupon for it, essentially earning me $3 for buying my favorite cat litter!)

Weekly total:
Shelf price - $108.91
I paid $33.66 + will get back $6.99, making it actually only $26.67!!
Yay for staying UNDER BUDGET this week and still stocking up some great stuff!

How did you do this week?
