Another Great Shopping Week!

I was out several times this week, so I stopped at quite a few stores.

My first stop was at Wal-Mart. Here's what I got:2 Malt-O-Meal cereals @ $1.00 each Used 2 $1.50 coupons
4 Honey Bunches of Oats @ $2.00 each Used 4 $2.00 coupons
3 Zantac @ $4.23 each Used 3 $5.00 coupons
1 Scotch-Brite toilet scrubber @ $4.67 Used FREE coupon
1 Nivea shaving lotion clearanced to $1.00 Used $2.00 coupon
4 Huggies cleanteam wipes @ $1.64 Used 4 $3/2 coupons
Gift card for $100.00
Total: $96.00

Earned : $4.00

Next stop was CVS. I picked up 3 CVS brand pain relievers.
Used a $2/$10 CVS brand purchase
Total was $9.97 (Paid in ECB's and gift card)
Received $11.97 in ECB's

Earned: $2.00

Another day I went to Wal-Mart again. It wasn't so good that time because they wouldn't let me use my $1.50 Malt-o-Meal coupons or my $5 Zantac coupons. I had figured I would have about $4.00 in overage so I picked out a toy for my son, but I ended up having to pay for it. I got:

6 bags Malt-O-Meal @ 1.00 each Used 6 $1.00 coupons
1 baby toy @ 3.97
Total = $4.67
Lost: $4.67

Next was Walgreens. This didn't go so great either. The register did not ring up everything properly. I would have had close to $0.00 out of pocket and been eligible for over $10.00 in rebates, but I ended up paying about $7.00 out of pocket because of the register messing up. I didn't have time to go back in that day, but I will probably return the stuff that did not ring up correctly. Even if I don't return it I will still have made money after I get the rebates.

Earned: at least $3.00

Next, another CVS run. Here's the stuff I got:

(Plus 2 Covergirl TruBlend and 3 Essence of Beauty gift bags I forgot to put in the picture.)

Total : $39.49 (paid in ECB's and gift card)
Received back $27 in ECB's

Lost: $12.49

Then I went to Food Lion. Here's what I got:

2 Beechnut cereals on closeout for $1.04 Used 2 $1.00 coupons
2 packs onion rolls @ $2.49 each Used FREE bakery item up to $4.99
26 jars and packs of baby food
on closeout for $0.23 and $0.37 each. Used several coupons
1 pack Food Lion travel wipes @ $1.49 Used Food Lion coupon for $1.50 off FL wipes
1 package outlet covers @ 1.39 Used Food Lion coupon for $2.00 off accessories
1 package chicken breasts @ $4.14 Used Food Lion coupon for $1.00 off chicken breasts

Total: $5.39

Lost: $5.39

Lastly, I took one final CVS run to finish out the baby deal and the Dove/beauty deal. Here's what I got:

Total : $26.83 (Paid in ECB's and gift card)
Got back $47 in ECB's

Earned: $20.17

IF YOU ADD UP ALL THE NUMBERS OF WHAT I EARNED AND LOST ON EACH STORE, I GOT PAID $6.62 TO DO ALL MY SHOPPING THIS WEEK!!!

"Un-Frugal" Product Review

It's Frugal Friday at Biblical Womanhood, and I thought I'd share a product that I found to be "un-frugal." A couple months ago I was in need of some laundry stain remover. I used to buy it at Big Lots for about $2.00 (before I discovered I could probably find a way to get it free at CVS). I had a coupon for Zout, though, so I thought I'd check the price and see if I could get it cheaper than the Big Lots kind. It came out to about the same price as the Big Lots kind, so I thought I might as well give it a try. I quickly discovered that I did not get my money's worth. It takes stains out just fine, but it has only one setting: JET STREAM. If I had an area of any substantial size that I needed to treat, I had to use a LOT of sprays to cover the whole area. After about a week of normal use, the bottle was about half gone. Normal use for us is not much. I don't think I will be buying the Zout brand any more (unless it costs about a dime or less) :). Has anybody else tried it? I'd like to know what you thought of it.
Be sure to check out Frugal Friday for lots of great ideas!

How to Get $14.99 worth of FREE Extra Bucks at CVS

1. Buy one Breeze 2 glucose meter at $14.99 the week of April 13-19.

2. Use a $30 off coupon that you got from the 3-16 Smartsource #2. (The cashier will adjust the coupon amount down to $14.99.)

3. Get back $14.99 in Extra Bucks

If you do not have a $30 off coupon, DON'T WORRY! You can order one for just $1! Click on the Coupon Clippers link below, click on "coupons", click on the "hot" tab, then scroll down until you see the coupon for the Breeze 2. The Coupon Clippers require a minimum order of $3, so go ahead and pick out a few more coupons while you're there. If you subtract the $1 that you spend on your coupon, you can still make $13.99 on the meter. The Coupon Clippers ship very quickly, so if you order soon, you can still get your coupon in time to use it next week. Just check their FAQ's page to find out their shipping schedule. Well, what are you waiting for?! Go get your coupon!

The Coupon Clippers

Update: Please pardon my mistake! The Extra Bucks are not for the Breeze 2 monitor. They are for the Contour monitor. Hopefully none of you have bought the wrong one! If you got the coupon I told you about, you are still good to go because it is good for either the Breeze 2 or the Contour monitor.

Certain flavors of Malt-O-Meal cereal are on rollback this week 2 for $2. Use this coupon for $1.50 off to make $.50 per bag! Plus, go ahead and get some more for free using this $1 off coupon! I know a lot of people hate to go to Wal-Mart, but I just can't help myself when they're going to pay me to shop there! (Depending on your cashier and your Wal-Mart, they may or may not give you the overage, but you can still get the cereal for free. I've never had any problem getting overage at my Wal-Mart.)

Please Be Patient With Us!

We are in the process of moving our blog, and we have a lot of other things going on this week as well. Hopefully we will have the new blog ready in the next couple of days, but until then we will probably not be posting as often as we typically do. Please be patient with us!

CVS Moneymakers for April 6-12

I have been trying to plan out my CVS trips for this week, but I can't really know for sure what I'm going to do until I find out if the $.99 Johnson's Buddies soaps and Johnson's shampoos are included in the Buy $25, get $10 ECB's deal. Oh, I hope, I hope, I hope! I am going to buy one first and see if it shows up on my receipt as counting towards the deal.

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about:
Johnson's Buddies soaps are $.99 each at CVS. There are printable coupons for $1 off (Money Saving Mom has the info on that). There is a deal at CVS this week where if you buy $25 worth of certain baby products, you get back $10 in ECB's. If the Johson's Buddies and shampoo count toward the deal, I will be able to work my way up to that $25 worth without paying anything for the Johnson's stuff.

Anyway, like I said, I don't know exactly how I'll be working my deals this week, but there are a couple of things I for sure will be getting because they are money makers.

1. Excedrin (Limit 5)
Sale price is $1.99
Use $2 coupons
Get $1 ECB back on each

2. Pepcid EZ chews (Limit 5)
Sale price is $7.99
Use $2 coupon coming out in this week's Redplum
Get $5 ECB's back (This is a monthly deal, but it's best to do it this week because they are on sale.)
Send in MIR for the full amount back (will be in this week's Redplum)

I'll let everybody know what the verdict is on the Johnson's Buddies and shampoo as soon as I find out!

New to CVS? Check out Money Saving Mom's CVS 101.

Super Savings Saturday

I didn't do much shopping this week because I didn't really need anything after last week's awesome deals!

But, I did make three trips to CVS.

Trip #1: 5 Softsoap Spa bodywashes, 6 Colgate Total toothpastes
Total = $20.42
ECB's back = $24.95
(I've got to call CS about getting my ECB's on the Colgate for the monthly deal. The weekly BOGO deal must have messed up the monthly deal. Did this happen to anyone else?)

Trip #2: 1 package Glucerna shakes, 1 jumbo pack Pampers
Total = $.48
ECB's back = $2
(I bought $15 worth of BeFine products, but returned them later because the ECB's didn't print. But I was able to use a $3/15 beauty coupon; that's why my total was so low.)

Trip #3: 3 packs Glucerna shakes, 2 Windex, 2 Shout, 1 Scrubbing Bubbles, 1 Palmolive
Total = $2.20
ECB's back = $12
($1 ECB was from my 1st quarter earnings.)

Blog Contests and Giveaways

Do you ever enter blog contests or giveaways? I found a really good list tonight at Laura Williams' Musings. Go take a look! I have entered several myself. We'll see if I win anything!

A Few Free Samples

Free sample of Purex Ultra Concentrate.

Free sample of Airborne Power Pixies.

Free sample of Texas Habanero Hot Sauce.

Super Savings Saturday

I got a ton of great deals this week! It would take me way too long to list them all, so I will just do the highlights.

On Thursday, I went to Harris Teeter, Wal-Mart, and 2 grocery salvage stores. Here is everything I got:
My total for all of this was $32.08!

Today I went to Ingles and the thrift store.

At Ingles, I got this stuff...

...and I paid $2.64 for it! I used my coupon for a free product from Mission (read about it in my Mail Call post). The lunch meat was marked down to $1.99 for a pound. The success rice was free after my coupon doubled. The salad was marked down to $1.49 and $0.99. I had found coupons for $2.00 off 2 when I was at Harris Teeter, so I got both salads for $0.47.

At the thrift store I found some tennis shoes for my son. They were $0.99.

Mail Call!

I only got two things in the mail today, but they were both good.

First, I got my sample of True Lemon. It had 2 packets of True Lemon, 1 of True Lime, and 1 of True Orange. It also had a coupon for $.40 off.

Second, I got a check from American Consumer Opinion for $8.00. I really like doing surveys from them because they send you a check as soon as you complete a survey, and they generally pay you between $4.00 and $8.00. I have also been able to do product testing for them. I get to keep the product, and I get a check as well.

Get a Free Swingline Stapler

All you have to do is take a short survey (I promise it is very short) and you will get a free Swingline stapler worth $20! Click here

Do you have a Grocery Salvage Store?

Some of my favorite places to shop are at the 2 grocery salvage stores I have nearby. I can get lots of things for just as cheap or cheaper than I can with coupons, and I don't have to do all the work organizing my coupons. For example: canned goods = $.35, all pasta = $.25, juice = $.75. I got a whole bunch of granola bars yesterday for $.33 a box. To find out if you have one of these stores near you, try checking Yahoo. Click on the "local" tab at the top, type in your zip code, and do a search for "Grocery salvage stores" or something of that nature. You never know, you might find out you have one that you never knew about.

More-Than-Free Glade Plug-ins

If you got a Sunday paper on March 16th, you should have gotten a coupon for $3 off a Glade Plugins Scented Oil Warmer. These are only $2.47 at Wal-Mart. I got 2 of them today, and made $.53 on each. I bought a case of Pampers, 3 boxes of Honey Bunches of Oats, and 2 Glade Plug-ins. I used 3 of the $2 Honey Bunches of Oats coupons and 2 of the $3 Glade Plug-ins coupons. (I should have used a Pampers coupon, but it was in the car, and I didn't feel like going back out.) My total for everything was less than the price of the Pampers! I love overage!

Harris Teeter: Oh, so much fun!

Early this morning I found myself on my way to Harris Teeter to take advantage of their triple coupons. I was a bit nervous as I have never had the opportunity to do this before, and I wasn't sure if it would turn out as well as I was hoping. But it did! Here's what I got:

The grand total? $10.24

And the really incredible thing about this is that $10 worth of this stuff I didn't even use coupons for!

Remember that catalina on Kellogg's cereal at Bi-lo and Food Lion? Well, they have the same thing at Harris Teeter. I bought Raisin Bran because I had some $3/2 coupons. It was also on sale for $2.39 a box. So I bought my 7 boxes of cereal first, got my $10 catalina, then started a new order and used my $10 off on all my other items. I paid $7.40 for the cereal, then paid $2.84 for everything else.

Wow! What a great day!

Grocery Gathering

It's time for the Thursday edition of the Grocery Gathering over at BeCentsAble. Make sure you go over and take a look!

Good deal on cereal at Food Lion

This is very similar to the Bi-Lo deal I posted earlier. I got this from Candace via Money Saving Mom:
Starting tomorrow, select Kelloggs cereals go on sale B1G1 (Frosted Flakes, Corn Pops, Fruit Loops and Apple Jacks). The regular price is $2.96-$3.25, so you can get one for $1.48-$1.63.
There is a catalina that prints until 3/30 for any Kelloggs (12 oz or larger):
buy 3-4 save $3 on next order
buy 5-6 save $6 on next order
buy 7 or more save $10 on your next order
There is a limit of two free (I assume on each kind), so if you buy 7 you'll have to get 4 of one kind, three of another, or some other combination. It has to be all in one transaction.
If you buy 7 it should cost $10.36-$11.41, and you get a catalina for $10 back.

Sign up for Zaxby's Z-Mail club, and they will send you a coupon for a free meal. I did this a while back, and I did receive the coupon.

Get a free breakfast at Jamba Juice on April 8 between 6am and 10 am. Find out if there's a store near you! Store locator

Um, Can We Say "More Honey Bunches of Oats"?

The Honey Bunches of Oats coupons have been reset again! Print a $2 coupon for Honey Bunches of Oats with Chocolate Clusters here, here, and here! You can only print one coupon per computer this time, though. (Oh, how sad, I can only add 3 more boxes to my stash of 24 boxes!) Go get yourself some more free or cheap cereal! I have gotten all of mine at Wal-Mart because that's the only store I can find that carries the chocolate kind. They are $2.24 regular price, but other grocery stores often have them on sale 2 for $4.00, so I just price match them when they're on sale somewhere else. Enjoy!

Good deal on cereal at Bi-Lo

Buy 7 boxes of select Kellogg's cereal, and get a catalina for $10.00 off your next order. This offer lasts until March 30.

The cereals to choose from are:
Raisin Bran
Frosted Flakes
Fruit Loops

You can get coupons for $3/2 Raisin Bran here
The Frosted Flakes and the Fruit Loops are BOGO until the 25th. They will
ring up half price.

I don't know the prices on any of these, but I will be asking my husband to check on his way to work Monday. This will still be a good deal, though, even if the prices are relatively high.

Let's price them hypothetically at $4.00 a box. I highly doubt they would be that much, but if they were, then the BOGO cereal would ring up $2.00 a box. 7 boxes would be $14.00. After you get the $10.00 catalina, that would be 7 boxes for $4.00, or $0.57 a box. Not bad!
I'll post the "un-hypothetical" prices as soon as I find them out!

Now Taking Requests

Are you looking for a good deal on something specific? Do you shop at any certain store and want to know what the best deals are? Let me know, and I will do my best to come up with the information for you! Leave a comment stating what you're looking for, and I will post my findings as soon as possible!

A Confession and an Admonition

My apologies for not posting anything yesterday. My husband surprised me and whisked me away to a nearby city for an all-day date! My confession is this: I saw a CVS on the way, and I asked if we could stop and go in. However, since we try to be as frugal on our dates as possible, I made sure to work some snacks for the day into a deal. We got all the snacks we needed, and still came out with 3 more Extra Bucks than when we went in!

So...my admonition is this:
If you have not started shopping at CVS yet, DO IT NOW!!! If you're still a little overwhelmed and confused by how the system works, be sure to read CVS 101 over at Money Saving Mom. It was not until I read that information that I finally got the courage to go and try "CVSing" for myself.

Mail Call!

I got some really fun stuff in the mail today:

1. A free book for our son. He gets a free book every month from the Cleveland County Partnership for Children. Find out at your local library if this program is available in your county!

2. A box full of samples and coupons from CVS. The only reason I can figure out that they sent it is that I emailed them recently.

3. Parenting magazine. (It was free, of course.)

4. A book I ordered from Amazon. I didn't have to pay for it because I used a giftcard I got for taking a survey. There are lots of good survey sites out there that either pay in cash or giftcards. One of my favorites is Survey Spot. I get survey invitations very frequently from them, and they pay anywhere from one to five dollars per survey. Most of the surveys I have taken have paid three dollars each. You can request payment if you have any amount in your account. I have received every single check I have requested from them.

5. A coupon for a free product from Mission. Go to their website, click "contact us", and there will be a place to click "coupon request." I was expecting a cents-off coupon, not a free item!

CVS Tutorial

Would you like to learn how to shop at CVS and get the things your family needs (like toothpaste, shampoo, razors) for FREE and even get extras to share with others?

Well, you have come to right place! I will attempt to explain the best I can how to use the CVS ExtraCare Bucks program to literally earn your family money by saving a ton of money!

First of all you need to pick up a CVS ExtraCare card at your local CVS store. It is a store loyalty card that tracks your purchases and also gets you cheaper prices than someone buying the same item not using an ExtraCare card.

It looks like this:

The main way you can save money at CVS is by using ExtraCare Rewards or bucks. ExtraCare bucks, or ECB's for short, are like CVS cash. They can be used to buy almost anything in the store (excluding stamps, alcohol, RX, gift cards). Your ECB's will print on the bottom of your receipt when you scan your CVS ExtraCare card and purchase a qualifying product.

Each week CVS puts out a weekly ad. You can find this ad in your Sunday newspaper, online here, or in your local CVS store. In this ad you will find all the things that are on sale that week as well as items that CVS is offering ECB's on that week.

For example this was in this week's ad:

So if you went into the store and bought the Revlon foundation you would pay the $9.99 out of pocket (plus tax), but you would get a coupon or ECB printed on the bottom of your receipt for $9.99 that you can use toward a future purchase. Sort of like an instant rebate check.

BUT if you already had ECB's that you earned from a previous purchase you would use whatever ECB's you had (let's say $10.00) to pay for the foundation, pay the tax of a few cents, and you would still get the $9.99 ECB's back on the bottom of your receipt. So now you have really gotten the item for FREE (plus tax) since you used your previous ECB's to pay for it.

Now in the scenario above you paid $10.00 for a $9.99 item. CVS will not give you change back for an ECB, you just lose it (they adjust the amount of the ECB down to the total of your order). So you would in essence lose a penny if you paid $10.00 when it only cost $9.99. But that is ok sometimes. In my opinion if I had a $8.00 ECB and a $10.00 ECB, I would rather pay with the $10.00 ECB and lose a penny then pay with the $8.00 ECB and then have to PAY $2.00+ tax out of pocket.

You can use any number of ECB's to pay for an order. If in the scenario above you had a $2.00 ECB, $3.00 ECB and $5.00 ECB you can use them all to pay. Like I said, ECB's are more like cash than coupons - you could use (10) $1.00 bills to pay so you could use (10) $1.00 ECB's to pay too! So treat them like cash - I guard my CVS coupon binder that contains my ECB's as much as I guard my wallet!

So the foundation that we talked about above was a FREE after ECB product and CVS usually has 1 - 2 FREE items each week. But they have many other items that produce ECB's each week that can turn out to be FREE or nearly free after you use a coupon on them.

Here's how:

The Softsoap bodywash pictured is on sale for $4.99 and will give you $4.00 back in ECB's. So if you paid with previous ECB's you would still pay $0.99 + tax for it. BUT there was a coupon for $1.00 off Softsoap bodywash in a recent newspaper insert.

So here is how your transaction would look:

Softsoap $4.99
- $1.00 manufacturer coupon
Total $4.00 + tax (pay cash or ECB's)
Get back a $4.00 ECB - so once again the item is FREE!
But it gets even better. Sometimes you can even earn more ECB's than you spend by combining a coupon and ECB deal (called moneymakers).

Here's how:

These Blink tears were already a "FREE after ECB item (FAECB)." But to make it even better there was a $3.00 coupon in a recent insert.

So your transaction would look like this:

Blink tear eye drops $7.99
- $3.00 manuf. newspaper coupon
Total $4.99+tax (pay in cash or ECB's)
Get back a $7.99 ECB!

So you would be earning $3.00 more in ECB's than you spent and get the item for FREE!
(Photos courtesy of iheartcvs.com)
Here are some tips to help you even more with your CVS shopping:
  • Ask for rainchecks. If CVS is out of any item, even a ECB item, ask for a raincheck. On the raincheck they should write the event code(a small # code printed in the CVS ad next to the ECB item) on the raincheck so that when you buy the item later you will not only get the item at the sale price, but they will able to print the ECB for you as well.

  • Watch the limits on ECB deals. The limit will be printed in the ad and on the shelf tag. If the item has a limit of more than 1 don't buy all the items in the same transaction. If you do, the ECB's for ALL of the items will print in one lump sum ECB. For example: if an item gives a $5.00 ECB and has a limit of 5 and you buy all 5 in a transaction you will get (1) $25 ECB! This is rather hard to use later if CVS has a slow week and you don't have a $25 total after coupons.

  • "Buy $ worth get xx ECB deals". For deals like "Buy $20 worth get $xx ECB" you don't have to buy all the items in one transaction. Just make sure to go back and finish doing the deal! The bottom of your receipt will keep track of all your purchases for the week. So if you bought $8.00 worth it will say "amount toward reward - $8.00, amount needed to reach reward - $12.00." This is the same for "buy 2 get xx ECB". You don't have to buy both items in one transaction - just don't forget to buy the 2nd one later!

  • Watch the bottom of your receipt. Not only will it keep track of your purchases like I stated above, it will also keep track of the limits. It will say how many items you have bought and if you have reached your limit yet.

  • Scan your card at the Coupon Printer every time you visit CVS! If your store has a price checker/coupon printer, scan your card there to get valuable CVS store coupons! Especially on your first visit that week, you can usually scan your card multiple times until it says "No more coupons available." Also watch for CVS coupons to print on the bottom of your receipt.

  • Stack your coupons if possible. CVS will accept 1 manufacturer coupon AND 1 CVS coupon on each item. So if you had a CVS store coupon for $1.00 of any deodorant and you had a manuf. coupon for $1.00 of Sure deodorant you could use both coupons and get $2.00 total off 1 Sure deodorant.

  • Watch the expiration dates on your ECB's!! If they expire most stores will not let you use them and you are in a sense throwing money away! There have been times that I have had ECB's expiring and no good ECB deals to do. So I would just buy milk, or TP or something my family needed instead of letting that "money" go to waste! I try to keep my ECB's filed (in my small coupon binder) with the ECB expiring the soonest first so I know when I have to use it.

  • Register your card at CVS.com. They will sometimes send you coupons like "$4 off a $20 purchase" and more in your email.

  • Hand your coupons to the cashier in a certain order. If you have any kind of $ off coupon like $5/$25, etc. hand the cashier that coupon first. Then hand all your manuf. coupons and CVS coupons. I always then ask the cashier what the total is before tax (since my ECB's will not pay the tax) and I then combine and grab any ECB's that I have that can get me closest to the total without going over (unless it is only a few pennies over).

  • Be nice to your store employees and cashiers!! I have 2 main CVS stores that I visit in my area and I know most of the employee's names and greet them by name as I come in the store. And they either know my name or know who I am (one store has a CVS hall of fame with pictures of great CVS shoppers and their coupon testimony posted and they call me "Hall of famer"!) I have to say, I have some wonderful CVS cashiers! I have shared diaper coupons and tips on how to do a really great deal or a hidden deal that week with them on multiple occasions. So, no groans as I come up to the cash register with my stack of coupons and sometimes even multiple transactions - they laugh and chat with me and try to guess how much I will pay for everything. It makes shopping at CVS so much more enjoyable and it also helps me uphold my Christian testimony!
I hope this has helped answer your questions about shopping at CVS and you are ready to give it a try!
If you have a question that I haven't answered, please either leave a comment or send me a email at centsiblesavings (@) yahoo (.) com.
