Décor on a Dime: Picture ledges

Decor on a Dime button

When I first started browsing through “thrifty decor land” these picture ledges were everywhere.

The Lettered Cottage had some beautiful ledges that she installed over bead board.  (Stay tuned,  because I am working on a similar project and hope to share with you on next week!)

picture lege 2

Sarah over at Thrifty Decor Chick had some beautiful picture ledges she used in her playroom/bonus room.

 picture ledge2

And my favorite inspiration catalog, Pottery Barn, had them too!

PB ledge 2

PB ledge

You could buy these ledges online from Pottery Barn (ranging from $35 - $55 each!!)

Or you could have “Thrifty Décor” like me and get then from IKEA!

ribba picture ledge

Ribba picture ledge from Ikea (ranging from $9.99-19.99 each)  Much more in my budget!

I had always wanted a way to display wedding pictures and family photos but never could create a “picture wall” that I liked.  But I loved the idea of these ledges!  You can change frames/pictures out easily, decorate them with seasonal decor if you wanted, and much more!

So here’s mine!  (Sorry for bad lighting, these are in my entryway hallway and the lighting is not that great.)

This is “our” side…  (still need to trade out some of the wedding photos and add some of our most recent beach pictures in here)

100_4200

This is our extended family side!

100_4201

The little sculpture came from the Dollar Tree.

   100_4202

The frames are from a variety of places.  I got a couple from IKEA, some were on clearance at Kohl’s, some I already had, and some I got from Goodwill and painted or stained darker to match my color scheme.

100_4208 I really do love my photos and frames in these ledges!

100_4209

So, now I am just trying to decide if I should leave the bottom part of the wall like this?

  100_4206

Or if I should do some wainscoting (that will go right along with the molding I have in my dining room, more on that later!)

Love this idea from Decor Chick!

What do you think?

(I think I am doing it!  As soon as I finish the other 10 projects I have going right now!)

Décor on a Dime party coming on Sunday!

Decor on a dime party button

I hope you have been enjoying all the Décor on a Dime projects I have been working on and showing you.

I have exciting news to share – it is going to be your time to share now!  Centsible Savings will be hosting the FIRST EVER Décor on a Dime linkup party!  I will be sharing another project I have been working on and then will let YOU link up your projects!

Here’s the guidelines for the party:

1.  Tell us about your décor that you have bought for a dime, or a project that you have done for a “dime!”  It can be any frugal find, as long as you got a great deal and did not PAY FULL PRICE!

2.  Tell us what you did with it – spray painted it, used it as is, revamped it, etc. and BE SURE to SHARE PICTURES!

3.  Then link back to me, Christina @ Centsible Savings by grabbing the Décor on a Dime party button below and posting it in your post with a link.

Decor on a dime party buttonSo get those projects ready and come back at 8:00 p.m. on the 15th (or anytime throughout the next week) to share your projects and pictures with me and the rest of my readers!  Then I will pick a few of my favorites and feature them on my blog the next week.

Can’t wait to see what you have been working on!

What’s for dinner: Potatoes and chicken on the grill!

We just recently had our first Food Lion open in our area and they had some great Grand Opening specials!

One was whole small fryer chickens for $0.39 a pound meaning I got whole chickens for $2.05 to $2.20 each!

My favorite way to cook these chickens is on the grill.  (Sorry, I don’t have pictures of the whole process, but I will talk you through it.)  You need to clean the chicken (take the giblets, etc out of the inside).  I leave the skin on to provide a barrier on the grill.  Then I take a kitchen scissors and cut along the spine on both sides, removing it, to open the chicken up so it will lay flat.

Then I use a dry marinade packet (that I got for FREE, of course!) and rub all over the chicken.  I grill the chicken rib/bone side down for a majority of the time.  Then flip and finish grilling until juices run clear.

Now we also had grilled red potatoes!  These are some of the best potatoes I have ever had – they literally melt in your mouth!  I got the recipe from my friend Christa’s blog – Grab Ur Fork.  You can read the full recipe here.  Basically you clean and cut red potatoes into thick slices and boil until they are almost done.  Then put them on the grill, brush with melted butter, and sprinkle with seasoning.  I like to use a ranch dressing mix package (that I get for Aldi for $0.69!) and salt and pepper.  Grill for a few minutes, then flip, brush with butter, sprinkle with seasoning and grill for a few more minutes.

101_4059

So here is our dinner!  We had fresh mango, grilled chicken, grilled red potatoes, and macaroni and cheese (made with FREE pasta and super cheap cheese from the Kroger mega sale!)  Mmmmmm, good!

101_4060

What are you having for dinner tonight?

Never too early for Christmas shopping! :)

My secondhand deals of the week!

secondhand steals and deals button

I actually was out early on Saturday morning and decided I would stop some yard sales on my way to my destination.  I got some great home decor items!

Here is what I found:

101_4065

 A very large beveled mirror!

The picture does not do it justice – I love the detail on the frame and the bevel in the mirror.  I just don’t love the color but nothing that a little spray paint can’t change!

Paid $10  (I walked through a local antique store after buying this and saw many mirrors in there like this one for $50 and up!)

A square decorative wall hanging.

This goes perfect in my bedroom (which is currently getting a mini-makeover, more on that later :)

Paid $3.00

2 tall candlesticks

I had been looking for tall candlesticks to go on the floor by my fireplace.  I saw some at Kohl’s that were $49.99 EACH!  Whew – too much for me!

These still have tags on the bottom from PartyLite!  (Partylite is a home decor party line like Home Interiors focusing on candles.)  In other words, they were not cheap!

She was asking $10.00 for one but said she had another one that had gotten broken.  I looked at the broken one and realized I could glue it and no one would ever know.  So, she let me have both of them for $10!

Paid $10.00

101_4043 Large metal urn

Don’t worry, this has already been transformed with my friend, Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint!  (And I am trying some antique gold Rub n Buff to bring out the design – more on that later.)

Paid $0.50!  (Plan to use this as the base for my 2 or 3 ball Ballard topiary knockoff!)

How about you?  Found any good yardsale or thrift store finds lately?

Décor on a Dime: Ballard Design DIY topiary dome

Ever come across pictures like this in the Ballard Design or Pottery Barn catalog?

I love topiaries!  But I don’t love the price Pottery Barn or Ballard Designs wants to charge for one. Like the dome topiary on the far left.

Ballard Design cost - $49.00!!!!

How about my DIY version?  :)

101_4077   You will need:

  • some sort of container (I got mine on clearance at Michaels for $1.99)
  • a foam ball (if you have coupon this would be cheaper) but mine cost $3.00)
  • Boxwood faux bush from Hobby Lobby ($7.99 reg. price but I got it on sale 50% off for $4.00)

ballard topiary 1

Start by taking the small bits of boxwood plant off the bush – you can just pull them off.

101_4072

Then push the small stem into the foam ball fairly close together.  (Some of mine wanted to fall out so you could secure with a glue gun if you wanted.  But if this is going to just sit on display somewhere, there is probably no need for the glue.)

101_4073

Make sure all the gaps are filled in and you have your own DIY version of a Ballard dome topiary !

ballard topiary 3

Here is the breakdown of cost:

$3.00 for the foam ball - I didn’t have a coupon :(

$4.00 for the boxwood plant from Hobby Lobby -50% off.  (And I have more of it left to do a smaller ball.)

and $1.99 for the white pot (clearance from Michael’s)

Total cost: $8.99! :)  I like that price much better than $49.00!  How about you?

Next up – I want to make a double ball (or maybe even triple ball) topiary like Ballard’s! :)

But for now, I am loving my Ballard inspired dome topiary!

ballard topiary

I am linking this up to the Ballard Designs Inspired party at the CSI project!
