Sunday Sustenance

As I was putting some things away today, I had to go out to the barn to put some things out there to store. I was reminded of the parable of the rich fool from Luke 12:16-21:

"The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy sould shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

God called this man a fool because he had concentrated so much on the things of this earthly life that he neglected to think about eternity. The amount of money or possessions that you have is not what is important in life. You cannot take them with you when you die. The only thing that will matter in eternity is whether you fully trusted the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and whether you lived your life for His glory in light of that forgiveness.

A lady lay dying, knowing that after she breathed her last breath she would spend eternity in Hell. She told a friend who had come to visit to look in the closet and see what was causing her to go to Hell. When the friend opened the closet door, she saw all the fashionable clothes and other material possessions that the dying lady had accumulated. She had placed all her attention on things that do not matter, and had neglected to think about eternity.

Have you been chasing after the things of this life? Is your attention on trying to get more money or possessions? Please stop and think about what will come after this life is over. You can know for certain that you can spend eternity in heaven (read more here). If you already have that assurance, are you living your life in light of eternity or are you placing your focus on earthly things?
