Frugal Friday: 44 plants for $3.16!

I stopped in Lowe’s tonight to get 2 ferns for my porch (on sale for $7.50 each this week).  And check on Valspar paint since they were offering a $5 rebate AND I had a $5 coupon from the FREE Valspar sample I got in the mail. :)

On a whim, I walked to the back of the garden center where they put discount plants and was surprised to find a HUGE table FULL of markdown plants!

Here is what I got:

These 4” Begonia plants were marked $0.50.  BUT there was a huge sign on the table stating that everything with a yellow tag was 75% OFF the ticketed price!  What???  $0.12 for these plants!!  I looked around to make sure there wasn’t a mob about to attack and began filling my buggy! :)

They looked like they had been bitten by the frost we had a week or so ago, but when you cleaned off the few brown leaves, the plants looked very healthy!  I got 10 pink plants.

They also had 6 ct. packages for $0.75 so $0.19 after discount!

I got two white 6 ct. packages and two red 6 ct. packages.

Then they had these beautiful white flowers, not even sure why they were on the markdown table?  But they were!  And were $0.50 so $0.12 after 75% off discount!

I got 10 of these as well!

Have you ever bought discounted plants?  Did they stay living for you?

And what “Frugal Find” did you find this week?  I would love to read about it in the comments!

  1. I bought a violet from Lowe's last spring for 50 cents because I felt sorry for it, and last week a gerbera daisy plant for $1 for the same reason. With some love, they're both thriving. I enjoy buying the dying, discounted plants and trying to bring them back. Great find for you!

  2. I wish I had better luck with plants! Do you buy new flowers every year? I can't even tell you how many times we've replanted our front bushes. I think {hoping I'm not jinxing them} this time they have actually survived a summer and winter!

  3. Renee, I do buy some new annual flowers each year. Mainly for filling the beds in front of the house and hanging ferns. But I always buy the 6 packs of plants they are on sale for $1.50 and just use those for planters and the flower beds.

But also each year, I try to add some new bushes or things that come back every year. That way I can spread the work and money over time. 2 years ago, I added lillies and azaleas in the back yard. Before that I added bushes in the front yard. I have been fortunate to have them all come back.

I will blog more about my yardwork later as I get it done this year. Wish I had good "before" pictures like when we moved in our house. It would be amazing to see the differences inside and out! When we moved in there was no beds anywhere! It was so bare!
